St Vincent Medical Center donated 5,000 pounds of non-perishable foods on May 20 to five schools and parishes with food pantries located in the community surrounding the hospital at 3rd and Alvarado Streets.

The food was donated the previous week during a food drive held among staff members at the hospital that coincided with National Hospital Week. The five recipients included St. Vincent’s Parish, Case de Amigos, Mother of Sorrows Elementary School, Our Lady of Talpa School and Pantry, and Our Lady of Miraculous Medal School and Pantry.
“We held the food drive because with the economic situation, we have a lot of people unemployed or underemployed,” said Sister Patricia Miguel, vice president of mission integration for St. Vincent Medical Center. “We have had an increase of people who are needing more. It’s caring for others, helping each other and for those who are most vulnerable.”
Miguel said this was the second year the food drive was held, and 800 more pounds of food were collected than in 2009. The hospital plans to make it an annual event, she added.
