Police are searching for suspects in a drive-by shooting outside a Hollywood nightclub on January 31 that left a victim hospitalized with a gunshot wound to the ankle. Authorities are also trying to identify several suspects who threw rocks and bottles at responding officers from a nearby parking structure.
The shooting occurred around 2:30am outside of the Cabana Club located in the 1400 block of Ivar Avenue. According to Lt. Robert Binder, with the LAPD’s Hollywood Division, two groups of people became involved in a fight outside the nightclub after closing time. As security guards broke up the fight, a suspect in a white Dodge Charger that was passing by, fired one shot, striking a 24-year-old victim in front of the club. Binder said he did not know whether the victim was involved in the fight or was a bystander. The victim was taken to a local hospital, where he underwent surgery on Monday, and is expected to fully recover, Binder said.
“We have recovered the bullet and we are hoping we can put something together,” Binder added. “We are also looking at all the video from cameras in the area, but there are no significant leads right now.”
Binder said he was not aware of any previous problems involving the Cabana Club, but added that there are often problems that occur outside of nightclubs in Hollywood after 2:00am when some patrons are intoxicated, including at the Arclight Cinemas’ parking lot across the street from the Cabana Club.
“That parking structure has been a problem in the past. There have been disputes that have arisen. It takes a while to get out of that structure around two in the morning, so there is the frustration factor,” Binder added.
He said officials at the Hollywood Division routinely work with club owners and others in the community to address any problems, and that officers routinely look for problems when the nightclubs close.
“We try to curb the activity that occurs around two in the morning and let people know that it is just not going to be tolerated in Hollywood,” Binder said. “We’ve worked very hard to make Hollywood safer and continue the revitalization that has been taking place.”
Anyone with information about the shooting at the Cabana Club or the assault on the officers is asked to contact investigators with the Los Angeles Police Department’s Hollywood Division at (213)972-2967.
During weekends and off-hours, call the LAPD’s 24-hour hotline at (877)LAPD247.
